French Bulldog questions answered: 40 things buyers ask

Lifespan, size, feeding, training, breathing, heat, shedding, apartments, children and travel — straight answers to the most-asked French Bulldog questions.

French and English Bulldog

How long does a French Bulldog live?

Most French Bulldogs live about 10–12 years. Lean body weight, airway health, heat safety and early vet care make the biggest difference.

How big will my French Bulldog get, and when do they stop growing?

Adults stand about 11–13 inches and weigh under 28 lbs. Most reach adult height by 9–12 months and fill out by 14–18 months. Track weigh-ins with our growth tracker.

Are French Bulldogs good for first-time owners, apartments and children?

Yes, for most households. They are compact, quiet, need modest exercise and bond closely with people. Supervise young children, as with any puppy, and teach gentle handling. They usually get along with other dogs and cats when socialized early.

What and how often should a French Bulldog puppy eat?

Feed a complete small-breed puppy food: three to four measured meals a day until about 6 months, then two meals. Keep them lean — extra weight worsens breathing and joint strain. Some Frenchies have sensitive stomachs, so switch foods gradually over 7–10 days.

How do I potty train a French Bulldog puppy?

Take your puppy out after sleeping, eating and play, and every 1–2 hours while awake. Reward outdoor success immediately and use a crate for rest. Most puppies are reliable by 4–6 months with consistency.

Why is my French Bulldog puppy biting so much, and when should training start?

Mouthing is normal teething and play. Redirect to chew toys and pause play when teeth touch skin. Start gentle training the day your puppy arrives — name, sit, crate and leash — in short, reward-based sessions.

How much exercise does a French Bulldog need?

About 30–60 minutes a day split into short walks and play. Avoid long walks in heat and never force exercise when breathing becomes noisy.

Do French Bulldogs have breathing problems, and what is BOAS?

Their short muzzle can cause Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome: noisy breathing, snoring, exercise intolerance and overheating. Ask about parent airway grading, keep your dog lean and talk to your vet if breathing is loud at rest.

What temperature is too hot for a French Bulldog?

Use caution above about 75°F, especially with humidity. Walk in early morning or evening, provide shade, water and air-conditioning, and know heatstroke signs: heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness.

Do French Bulldogs shed, bark or need much grooming?

They shed lightly to moderately, are not hypoallergenic, and are easy to groom: weekly brushing, wipe facial wrinkles, trim nails and clean ears. Most are not big barkers.

Can French Bulldogs be left alone or fly on airplanes?

Adult Frenchies can manage a few hours alone with a routine; puppies need more company. Many airlines ban brachycephalic breeds in cargo — which is why we deliver by ground, door to door.

What should I prepare and what should a purchase agreement include?

Prepare a crate, harness, bowls, puppy food, chew toys and a vet appointment. The agreement should state identity, price, deposit, delivery date, health guarantee and cancellation terms.
